Violence in the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales: a corpus-based approach
2010
The purpose of this article is to carry out a corpus-based study on the presence of violence in a selection of eight tales by the Grimm's Brothers by looking at the terms which can be said to relate to the semantic field of violence. More specifically, this study will analyse a selection of eight tales in which the frequency of the words cut, dead and blood will be studied in detail. These words have been chosen due to their possible connection to violence after carrying out a quantitative analysis of the frequency of the whole main corpus. My initial hypothesis is that the corpus-based study of those eight tales would support my intuition regarding the high percentage of violence in the Br…
Exploring the sense distributions of homographs
2006
This paper quantitatively investigates in how far local context is useful to disam-biguate the senses of an ambiguous word. This is done by comparing the co-occurrence frequencies of particular context words. First, one context word representing a certain sense is chosen, and then the co-occurrence frequencies with two other context words, one of the same and one of another sense, are compared. As expected, it turns out that context words belonging to the same sense have considerably higher co-occurrence frequencies than words belonging to different senses. In our study, the sense inventory is taken from the University of South Florida homograph norms, and the co-occurrence counts are based…
ALL OR NOTHING: A SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF HYPERBOLE
2009
This paper focuses on hyperbole, a long neglected form of non-literal language despite its pervasiveness
in everyday speech. It addresses the production process of exaggeration, since a crucial limitation in
figurative language theories is the production and usage of figures of speech, probably due to the intensive
research effort on their comprehension. The aim is to analyse hyperbole from a semantic perspective in order
to devise a semasiological taxonomy which enables us to understand the nature and uses of the trope. In
order to analyse and classify hyperbolic items a corpus of naturally occurring conversations extracted from<br …
Korpusu izmantošana angļu akadēmiskās rakstīšanas mācīšanā
2016
